The Board of Education is expected to accept the resignation of Dr. Joseph A. Laria as superintendent of schools effective May 9, 2013. Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Louis M. Zocchia is expected to be appointed as acting superintendent through June 30, 2013.

In January, the Board appointed Maria Rianna to serve as the next superintendent of schools, with her term to begin on July 1, 2013, when Dr. Laria had planned to retire.

Dr. Laria expressed deep regret for his departure, and assures us that he will remain available to assist as necessary during the leadership transition period.

New York State law requires that an acting superintendent of schools be appointed in the case of a sudden departure of a sitting superintendent. Ms. Rianna has committed to complete the school year in her current position as the assistant superintendent for instruction and administration in Smithtown.

Mr. Zocchia was appointed as assistant superintendent for human resources last summer after working many years in the West Islip School District, where he served as assistant superintendent for human resources dating back to 2004. Since joining our staff, Mr. Zocchia has been responsible for interviewing, hiring, disciplining and dismissing district staff, as well as for negotiations, among other important personnel functions.

Dr. Laria was initially appointed as an interim superintendent of schools in Glen Cove in the spring of 2010 following the retirement of then Superintendent Dr. Laurence Aronstein. He was unanimously appointed as superintendent mid-way through the 2010-11 school year.

Always showing a devout interest in our students’ success, Dr. Laria was a fixture at many district events during the last three years. We thank him for his contributions to Glen Cove, and wish him well in his retirement.
