Equipped with buckets and nets, water shoes and life jackets, first graders begin their study of local marine life with a visit to the muddy beach at Dosoris Pond.  They quickly zero in on the Pond's most ubiquitous inhabitant,  Ilyanassa obsoleta, the humble mud snail.

A hundred or so mud snails are now guests in newly installed aquariums in first grade classrooms, where children will be learning more about them as they try to keep them happy.
