The theme for P.A.R.P. (Parents As Reading Partners) this year is Reading Is Out Of This World.  The first graders in both Ms. Doran’s and Mr. Segreti’s classes collaborated on a joint bulletin board based on Steve Metzger’s book, When Pluto Visits The Earth.  Each class formed an opinion on whether or not Pluto should remain an official planet or renamed a “dwarf” planet and shared their ideas with friends and family.

On January 14, 2014, author Steve Metzger visited Gribbin School and gave a Power Point presentation of his work, which happily included When Pluto Visits The Earth, in addition to two of his other works – The Turkey Train and Detective Blue.  All the students engaged in lively discussions with the author and Mr. Metzger signed multiple copies of his books which students had pre-ordered.

At the conclusion of his presentation Mr. Metzger was anxious to see the “Pluto” bulletin board which he signed with the slogan “Happy Reading!”  He also expressed his delight with the way that these classes incorporated his work into the “Opinion and Persuasive Writing” unit of study in the core curriculum.
