Glen Cove BOE Extends Superintendent’s Service; Lifts Interim Tag

Following several months of screening and interviewing candidates to serve as the next Superintendent of Schools for the Glen Cove City School District, the Glen Cove Board of Education determined that the leadership of the district was presently in very good hands. As a result, at its March 7th meeting, the Board voted unanimously to appoint Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Laria to continue the work he began last summer and remain as Superintendent for the next three years.

Dr. Laria arrived in Glen Cove in the spring of 2010 to man the district’s transition from retiring Superintendent Dr. Laurence Aronstein to the next permanent superintendent. He officially took the reins on July 1, 2010 and has worked hard to improve the day-to-day operations of the district while increasing transparency to keep the community informed and engaged in its schools. More recently, Dr. Laria submitted a working draft of the 2011-12 school year budget to the Board of Education during the most challenging economic climate in decades.

“While the Board was privileged to meet with a number of outstanding candidates, we are very happy to have Dr. Laria remain as Superintendent for the next three school years,” said Glen Cove Board of Education President Ida McQuair. “The Board has been very pleased with Dr. Laria’s performance as Interim Superintendent this year, and we are very heartened by his willingness to undertake a full superintendent’s appointment. We trust that the many improvements Dr. Laria has made happen in our district will continue.”

In addition to having an experienced leader with a long track record of success at the helm for another three years, Glen Cove will benefit financially from the appointment. Dr. Laria will forgo health insurance, and the district is not required to pay pension contributions on his behalf.

“I wish to thank the community and the Board of Education for the honor and privilege of representing the children of Glen Cove City School District…I accept this public trust with pride and humility,” stated Dr. Laria. “The pride is in knowing that Glen Cove possesses an excellent staff and enjoys strong community support for its educational programs. The humility springs from the responsibility I share with the staff and community to maintain and expand excellence in education in the years to come.”

Currently in his 47th year in public education, Dr. Laria has 32 years of experience as a school superintendent in New York State, recently serving as the acting superintendent in the Hempstead, North Babylon and Riverhead school districts. He has also held the superintendency for the Connetquot, Elwood, and South Country School Districts in Suffolk County.

Through the years, Dr. Laria has been active with numerous educational leadership organizations, including the Executive Committee of the NYS Council of School Superintendents and the State Education Department Commissioner’s Advisory Council on School Business Management. He has also played an integral role in developing the framework for fostering school-business partnerships through his work with the state’s School-Business Alliance Task Force and is listed among the Top 100 Outstanding School Executives in North America.

“I resolve to remain a visible, responsive, and responsible public servant,” added Dr. Laria. “I am excited and enthusiastic about working to make the Glen Cove schools better for children in a community which demands, and yet appreciates creativity and excellence.”
