The Glen Cove Board of Education and Superintendent Maria Rianna acknowledged the outstanding achievements of three Glen Cove High School students at the Board of Education meeting on Oct. 20.

The evening began with the board recognizing senior Blake Woods, who was named a semifinalist in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program, an academic competition for Black American high school students. More than 160,000 high school juniors from all parts of the U.S. requested consideration in the program when they took the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Also honored for academics was senior Samantha Smith, who was designated a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the 2013 PSAT/NMSQT, which was taken by more than 1.5 million students.

Smith was also recognized for her musical achievements. The high school senior, along with fellow classmate Ryan Carmody, has been selected to perform in an All-National Honor Ensemble presented by the National Association for Music Education at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. Smith will perform with the All-National Orchestra Band, while Carmody will sing with the All-National Mixed Choir.

Members of the Board and Superintendent Rianna congratulate Woods, Smith and Carmody on their prestigious achievements.
