Glen Cove HS Honors Winter Athletes

The Glen Cove High School Athletic Department and Booster Club honored its Winter Varsity student-athletes with an evening of awards and recognition. Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Denise Kiernan and Booster Association Board of Director’s Co-President Linda Perlman presided over the evening’s activities, which were highlighted by the presentation of the coveted Superintendent’s Award. Maureen Pappachristou also serves as Co-President of the Booster Club.

The Superintendent’s Award is presented each athletic season to an outstanding senior. One nominee is selected from each of the seasonal teams. Elisabeth Flores was chosen to receive this honor for her excellence on the Kickline squad. Elisabeth is ranked 17th academically in the Class of 2011, is a member of the High Honor Roll, and participates in numerous school/community organizations, including DECA and the World Hunger Group. Stephanie Marlunda (Girls Basketball), Cassandra Napoli (Cheerleading), Valedictorian Rahul Nath (Wrestling), Lorena Silva (Winter Track), and Andrew Sakhaee (Rifle) were also nominated for the award.

Each Winter Team recognized an MVP and Booster Award Winner. They are:
Cheerleading: MVP Award - Cassandra Napoli; Booster Award - Kayla Kenary
Kickline: MVP Award - Elisabeth Flores; Booster Award - Rachel Vitale; Spirit Award – Antonella Coscarelli
Rifle: MVP Award - Megan Pemberton; Booster Award - Andrew Sakhaee
Wrestling: MVP Award - Aaron Sylver; Booster Award - Alexey Bogdanich
Winter Track: MVP Award - Billy Daniele; Booster Award - Lorena Silva
Boys Basketball: MVP Award - Mauro Carignano; Charlie Hustle Award - Jonathan Fiorino

The Girls Basketball team advanced to the playoffs this year and also earned New York State Scholar-Athlete Recognition with a cumulative academic average greater than 90.

Additionally, eight varsity wrestlers were named All-Conference, including Rahul and Alexey, with Aaron achieving All-County status. Other All-Conference wrestlers were Julio Bonilla, Fabrisky Jean-Claude, Calogero Guastella, Ricky Liang and Joseph Nicolich. Also making All-Conference were Andrew and Marc Graziosi of the Rifle team, Mauro of Boys Basketball and Taylah Hudson of Girls Basketball with teammate Heather achieving All-County, and Nicole and McKayla Hernandez achieving All-Class.
Varsity and Junior Varsity letters and pins and plaques for longevity were also awarded to members of the different athletic teams.

Ms. Kiernan and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Laria reinforced to all of the student-athletes on hand the true value of participation in athletics: that it is not just about how many games you win, or the accolades you receive, but rather the camaraderie and friendships that are developed among teammates, the character building that takes place, and the sportsmanship that is exhibited on the field in the heat of competition. Ms. Kiernan also gave the athletes a homework assignment: to log onto YouTube and watch a video about an autistic high school basketball player named Jason McElwain (aka JMac) who can serve as an inspiration to all.
