First-grade students at Gribbin School enjoyed a different kind of math lesson when their teacher Antoinette Hatzopoulos incorporated the use of pumpkins to assist them with counting and adding up to 10.

The activity, which included students counting and adding pumpkin seeds, was inspired by their read aloud “How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?” The children worked in small groups, with different sized pumpkins. They also learned related vocabulary words, such as pulp, rind, blossoms and ribs.
