Finley Middle School’s student council and the National Junior Honor Society hosted the first Thanks-for-Giving Turkey Trot Challenge on Nov. 20. Students donated a canned or boxed food item in exchange for entrance into the Trot Challenge, which was held in the lower gym.

Upon arrival, students were surprised to find that they had been broken into teams and that the Trot Challenge was a series of obstacle relay races, including Hula Hoop Hoopla, Jump Rope Jungle and Scooter Scram. Teachers and administrators were thrilled to see the teamwork, camaraderie and excitement as the teams raced to the finish in each event. With the music pumping and faculty and parents watching, the blue team took first place overall in the challenges.

All food donations were used to create Thanksgiving baskets for Glen Cove families in need, with Finley providing 41 families with a Thanksgiving meal. In addition, almost $400 in gift cards was collected to be put toward the Holiday Adopt a Family Program.

The food drive was coordinated by guidance counselor Kristen Muratore in partnership with Greenvale Schools, Friends Academy and Finley’s own faculty and students, making it a huge success. Gift cards were donated from staff members, the Glen Cove Women’s Club and both partnering schools.
