High School Students STEP Up for Science Competition

Win Multiple Awards at Statewide Science Conference

Congratulations to Glen Cove High School students Rina Hernandez, Jasmyne Martin, Cristino Chavez, and Nicole Alexander as their abstracts were accepted into the Poster Presentation Competition at the 13th Annual STEP (Science, Technology Entry Program) Conference in Albany.

Rina and Jasmyne teamed to win 2nd place in the Biological Life Sciences category. Their abstract addresses environmental factors that affect tumor growth. Nicole and Christino combined to win 3rd place in the Social Sciences category. Their project shows how art can be used therapeutically. The students are pictured here holding their trophies from the event, being congratulated by STEP faculty advisor Brendan Clements and Glen Cove Science Chairperson Thomas Pye. (Jasmyne is missing from the photo).

STEP, which is comprised of 51 colleges and universities across New York State, provides middle and high school students with practical experience in the scientific, technical, and health-related fields and prepares them for the rigors of college and beyond. Over 400 students and 125 program directors/advisors regularly attend this conference.
