Landing School student Parker Wiesner was awarded first place in the NBA FIT Dribble, Dish & Swish contest regional finals on Jan. 24 at Queens College.

Wiesner and six other Landing students were invited to participate in the regional finals, along with other students from the tri-state area, after their school took part in the contest during gym class under the direction of physical education teacher Karen Serani in January.

In preparation for the event, Serani organized many opportunities for the participating students to practice their basketball obstacle course skills in front of larger groups of people, which included the children competing against Principal Dimitri Kryoneris in front of the entire student body. The students also had an opportunity to practice at Finley Middle School thanks to the coordination efforts of Glen Cove Athletic Director Denise Kiernan, Finley Middle School Principal Nelson Iocolano and Finley physical education teachers Angela Zupa and Steve Tripp.

Principal Kryoneris and the entire Landing School community commend Jordan Howe, Nia Phillips and Eli Reinheimer (7-8-year-old category); Morgan Hernandez and Wiesner (9-10-year-old category); and Samantha Silva and Jose Santos (11-12-year-old category) on their participation in the regional finals. They also expressed their congratulations to Wiesner, who was named first-place champion in the 9-10 year old boys’ division and Hernandez, who recorded her fastest time of 26.59, placing third in the girls’ competition.

The NBA has awarded Wiesner a three-day all-expense paid trip to New York City to the NBA FIT Dribble, Dish & Swish finals, held during the NBA All-Star weekend from Feb. 13-15. Serani plans to coordinate a pizza party for all seven winners to congratulate them on their wonderful achievements.
