It’s On to the High School for Finley Middle School Grads

Eighth graders at Finley Middle School said goodbye to their home of the last three years and prepared to make the final stop in their K-12 educational careers in the Glen Cove School District: Glen Cove High School. With much of the fanfare of a high school commencement, Finley’s Class of 2011 (which will be the GCHS Class of 2015) celebrated their advancement with a moving-up ceremony a day prior to their high school counterparts’ farewell.

Students Vivian Rysdek, Samantha Smith, and Blake Lee Woods led the salute to the flag as the Seventh-Grade Band performed a moving rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” that resonated throughout the school’s Wunsch Center. Students Diana Delgrosso, Ryan Carmody and Heaven Guanco gave solo performances, while Dylan Silas provided reflections on the last three years at Finley. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Laria advised the Finley grads that the next four years at Glen Cove High School will be a strong factor in the direction of their lives.

New York State Regent Roger Tilles was also in attendance and was presented with the Finley Middle School “Our Hero” award for his support of the school’s children and students throughout Long Island.

One by one, Assistant Principal Lawrence Carroll called upon the eighth graders to approach the stage to receive their middle school diplomas from Principal Dr. Anael Alston. Enclosed in the graduation program was a “thank you” from the Finley Class of 2011 to parents, guardians, family, friends and all of the teachers and staff that supported them throughout their three years at the school.

“From here, we will strive to attain many goals as we shape ourselves into flourishing adults,” the students wrote. “Whatever our individual accomplishments, we hope our families and community will always be proud of us.”

Randy Finjer led Finley’s eighth-grade Red Team, while Judith Geraghty led the Blue Team. Congratulations to all.
