Students Interview a Firefighter

Deasy students in Wendy Romanoff's first-grade class were visited by retired New York City firefighter Francis Heffernan.

Armed with notepads and pencils, the students interviewed Mr. Heffernan to learn how firefighters support and help the community. They also learned strategies for fire prevention. Each student then wrote a page that will be included in a class book about firefighters.

This inquiry-based approach allowed students to ask questions and obtain answers through an interactive process. The class plans to interview other community workers, as well. According to Mrs. Romanoff, "Good questions lead to great answers."
