Glen Cove High School senior Lindsay Dwyer has signed a National Letter of Intent for a full scholarship to the University of Illinois, a Big 10 Division I NCAA college. Dwyer is a six-consecutive-year national qualifier in gymnastics.

Dwyer, who finished first on bars (9.525) at the New York State championship meet in Rochester in March and won the all-around (37.70) at the USA Gymnastics Region VI championship meet in Springfield, Massachusetts in April, has a 96.86 GPA and achieved high honor roll status every semester during her high school career. Her class schedule is comprised of honors and Advanced Placement classes, and she is a member of the National Honor Society. In addition, she has volunteered for a variety of organizations, including the K.I.D.S. Plus sports program for children with disabilities, the Big Sister/Little Sister program at Gold Medal Gymnastics Center, and multiple American Cancer Society Relay for Life events.
“I’m so happy and excited,” Dwyer said. “I’m looking forward to the atmosphere of a different place.”
Dwyer’s mother, Leslie, said her daughter picked the University of Illinois because she wanted a good school.
“She wanted to go somewhere that had a great gymnastics program and a great academic program,” Ms. Dwyer said. “The academics were equally if not more important than the gymnastics.”
“[Dwyer] is an unbelievable gymnast and at the top of her class,” said guidance counselor Christine Mulhall. “She’s so humble and has taken some of the hardest classes offered at Glen Cove. Even with all of her traveling, she still managed to keep up with her coursework and be a good friend.”
