Cards for Safyre

Prior to winter break, first-grade students in Jaclyn Sandler and Jessica Thompson’s class at Deasy School created holiday cards for Safyre Terry, a burn victim and orphan from Schenectady, New York.

Two years ago, Safyre’s father, sister and two brothers were killed in a fire. Safyre was found next to her father, who used his body to shield her from the flames. She is the sole survivor of the blaze, although she suffered burns on more than 75 percent of her body. Safyre's only Christmas wish was to receive holiday cards in order to fill up her tree cardholder.

Teachers explained to students that although Safyre no longer has her family, she is still thankful for what she does have. The students were also read “The Thankful Book” by Todd Parr to reinforce the message of being grateful.
