Glen Cove HS Meets the Candidates

Glen Cove High School recently hosted an informative mayoral debate between incumbent Mayor Ralph Suozzi and his Republican challenger Paul Meli. Organized through the high school CAUSE (Community Action Using Student Empowerment) class under the direction of teacher Susan Poulos, the entire senior class was invited to sit in and watch the candidates respond to questions delivered by their high school peers.

A student panel of eight judges questioned the candidates on local issues such as the waterfront project, traffic, law enforcement, quality of life, illegal housing and other issues, with the final question being “Why do you want to be Mayor of Glen Cove?” Each candidate also had the opportunity to give closing statements. In addition to asking questions, students moderated the event and served on committees established to handle the decorations, cleanup and security of the candidates, much like a real debate.

The candidates for both the Mayor’s seat and City Council participated in an informal meet-and-greet with the students in the commons area following the debate. Students also held a mock election in which Mayor Suozzi was reelected. News 12 and TV 55 covered the debate on television and it was streamed live on the Glen Cove School District website.
