A Special Thanksgiving Meal and Tribute

Students and staff at Landing Elementary School enjoyed a tasty Thanksgiving feast in the school’s All-Purpose Room, complete with all of the trimmings. This year’s event took on special meaning as students and staff paid tribute to longtime school nurse Mary Anne Germino, who is battling cancer.

Classes prepared special tributes to Ms. Germino, including Denise Powloski and Michelle Orlando, who shared their recipe for “Sweet Germino Pie.” Landing Principal Dr. Michael Israel and Student Council officers Szymone Frye and Anthony Rant presented a plaque to family friend and Landing School supporter Scott Genova, who accepted the plaque on behalf of Ms. Germino.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Laria also stopped by after visiting Ms. Germino in the hospital to relay a message to the Landing students from her.

“Ms. Germino is in wonderful, wonderful spirits. She is the profile of courage,” said Dr. Laria. “She wishes you all a happy Thanksgiving and thanks you for being an important part of her life.” Dr. Laria later sang a Frank Sinatra song in her honor.

Ms. Germino has proven to be a true champion for the children of the school, both in her actions as a nurse and as a role model.

“For many years, Ms. Germino has been our caregiver, and it’s time that we show her our gratitude for looking after us all these years,” added Dr. Israel.

Following the tribute, Landing School parents and guardians joined their children for the annual Thanksgiving feast, which was sponsored by the school PTA.
