Scholastic Recognizes Connolly Writer

Connolly School fifth grader Ireanna Peralta is the winner of a national writing contest, sponsored by Scholastic Storyworks magazine. Ireanna and other students in Frank Monteleone’s class read a nonfiction article entitled "The Awesome Powers of Ethan Z" published in the Scholastic magazine. The article is about a boy who finds the power from within to ignore bullying and mean-spirited behavior from others who pick on him because of his physical differences. Students were asked to write their opinions on how Ethan should stand up for himself.

Ireanna’s essay was one of only 10 nationwide to be chosen for the award. She received a free copy of the book Powerless by Matthew Cody and a letter from Storyworks Assistant Editor Justin O’Neill, complimenting her on her “well-structured” and “detailed” paragraphs and overall take on bully prevention.

“I suggested he ignore them. If that were me, I would tell them to stop,” said the courageous young Ireanna, who is congratulated here by Connolly Principal Rosemarie Sekelsky, Mr. Monteleone, and teacher Lucretia Simone.
