Finley’s Football Team Goes Undefeated

Congratulations to Finley’s football team on an undefeated 2016 season! On Oct. 24 the team traveled to Massapequa to play Berner Gold Middle School. In the first quarter Berner scored the first touchdown of the game and added an extra point, making the score 7-0.

In the second quarter, Finley got on board when quarterback Victor Vaughan scored on a 15-yard run. Unfortunately, the team missed the additional point, making the score 7-6. At halftime, Finley was behind, 14-12.

In the third quarter, Finley came out with a purpose and put together a great drive in which halfback Jovanne Howe caught a 10-yard pass from quarterback Francesco Sfoggia. Fullback Jason Garcia scored the extra point and Finley took the lead, 18-14. On Berner’s next possession, cornerback David Milanese stopped their drive with a great interception. Finley capitalized on the turnover when Garcia rumbled in from 35-yards out. Tight end William Merkel caught the extra point pass and Glen Cove increased its lead, 26-14.

In the fourth quarter linebacker Matt Coyle intercepted another Berner pass and took it 65-yards for another touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter, defensive end Andrew Glaviano picked up a Berner fumble and returned it deep into Berner territory. Fullback Jordy Zecena scored the final touchdown of the day. Finley came out on top 38-14.
