Accompanied by some local veterans, Glen Cove City Mayor Ralph Suozzi visited every elementary school in the Glen Cove School District to encourage youngsters to attend the city’s Memorial Day parade with their families. Mayor Suozzi and the veterans will spoke about the history and significance of Memorial Day and the importance of honoring those who have paid the ultimate price in serving our country.

Students were encouraged to thank a veteran anytime they come across one. While there, the mayor and veterans also presented gifts to the young students– handheld American Flags to wave with pride during the parade. They also joined students in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of “God Bless America,” as well as other patriotic songs.

Sam Espisito, a veteran of the Vietnam War and member of VFW Post 347 of Glen Cove and Vincent Martinez Jr., a former U.S. Marine, were among the vets who joined the mayor during his visits to Landing and Connolly Elementary Schools (as pictured).

The City of Glen Cove’s Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday, May 28, 2012 beginning at Noon at Robert M. Finley Middle School. The Mayor will also present local veterans of WWII with special medallion-sized coins during a ceremony to be held this Saturday at 3 p.m. at City Hall, honoring their service.
