GCHS Student to Host MSG Varsity’s “Student News” this Weekend

Junior, Francesca Sharper to host show  featuring stories from area high schools

Glen Cove High School junior Francesca Sharper will host an all-new episode of “Student News” this Saturday, June 9 at 12:30 p.m. on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s 24/7 television network dedicated to all things high school. “Student News” is a compilation of news items from high school students throughout the tri-state region. The June 9 episode of “Student News” will be the show’s last new episode for the 2011-2012 school year.

Francesca only became involved in television production this school year, when she studied it in two courses. She really enjoys participating in the making of her school’s own student news program, and likes working both in front of and behind the camera. Her talent and hard work have paid off. In addition to being asked to host MSG Varsity’s “Student News,” Francesca was recently the recipient of Honorable Mention in the prestigious V Awards, which recognize and reward excellence in student-produced television content.

When asked about the experience, Francesca said, "Hosting ‘Student News’ was an amazing experience for me. It was so much fun getting a feel of what goes on at a real studio." MSG Varsity Regional Manager for High School Partnerships Kevin Waters was on hand to welcome Francesca, who was accompanied by fellow GCHS Communication Arts student and regional finalist in the 2012 MSG Varsity V-Awards Summer Smiley, who covered the broadcast for the GCTV Friday News.

“Student News” features one student who hosts the show from in-studio, introducing clips and news pieces from other high schools throughout the area. In this episode, host Francesca Sharper introduces segments from the following area high schools: in Long Island—Hauppauge High School, Roosevelt High School and Deer Park High School; in Westchester—Valhalla High School and White Plains High School; in New Jersey—Wayne Valley High School, Bishop George Ahr High School, River Dell High School, Roxbury High School, and Hopatcong High School; and in Connecticut—Amity Regional High School.

MSG Varsity is available exclusively on Optimum Channel 14, with on-demand programming available on Optimum Channel 614. Francesca's episode will rerun throughout June. The segment will also be available on this site in the near future.
