Connolly School teachers took part in professional development with Columbia University’s Teachers College Reading and Writing Project staff developer Amanda Denmore on April 23.

Glen Cove educators have been receiving ongoing training in the program, which is new to the district this year. According to Connolly School Principal Julie Mullan, Ms. Denmore shares teaching strategies and best practices with the educators in narrative writing, research-based writing and other topics. In their most recent session, teachers went over on-demand quick assessments. The teachers were tasked with producing a writing sample based on a specific prompt in an allotted time. Ms. Denmore modeled the assignment for the teachers, discussed the theory behind it and described what the lesson should look like in the classroom.

As for the students, Mrs. Mullan said the new curriculum has excited students and sparked a deeper love for writing.
