The 2018 Finley Middle School Youth and Government program, led by teachers Mrs. Jacklyn Burnett and Mrs. Tracy Roberts, had the opportunity to join a Hofstra University Political Science class where Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini spoke.

District Attorney Sini talked about the importance of civic participation, ethical leadership and making informed decisions. Later in the day, Finley students received a guided campus tour by former Glen Cove alumnus and current Hofstra University student Stevens Martinez. Mr. Martinez also spoke to the students about his internship experience at the state capital.

In November, the Youth and Government Program will be participating in a three-day experiential learning conference in which students take part in a simulation of the state’s democratic process. Students act as senators and assembly members, writing, debating and voting on legislation that affects them. Students will also learn and model parliamentary procedures.

Special thanks to Mrs. Jacklyn Burnett and Mrs. Tracy Roberts for their hard work and dedication to the Youth and Government program; Dr. Craig Burnett, assistant professor of political science at Hofstra; Dr. Meena Bose, executive dean of public policy and public service programs at Hofstra, who co-directed the State and Local Speaker Series; Hofstra’s Vice President of University Relations Melissa Connolly; and Mrs. Johanna Farrell and Mr. Stevens Martinez for coordinating this trip and hosting our students.
