Superintendent Dr. Maria Rianna and Athletic Director Denise Kiernan expressed their pride in the soccer team members, who were named Long Island Co-champions and Nassau County Class A Champions, on their outstanding season.
“I am so proud of our team and our spectators,” Dr. Rianna said. “Other districts have said that the level of play on the field was comparable to the World Cup. You are a talented, wonderful group of individuals who have really played with honor, respect and dignity throughout the season.”
“I remember getting on the bus and speaking to you about the word ‘experience,’” Kiernan said to the players. “Do you remember that? No matter what happens in high school athletics it’s about the experience that you will remember best and this experience has provided the Glen Cove community, staff, students and yourselves with a memory that will last a lifetime.”
Also acknowledged was Glen Cove senior AJ Perfetti. AJ raised money to purchase and assist in the installation of new basketball hoops for Finley Middle School’s blacktop as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project.

Glen Cove Football Commemorates 100 Years
Glen Cove High School’s alumni, students, faculty and staff gathered on Maiden Field to celebrate the school’s Centennial Football Team season opener on Sept. 9.
Alumni spanning the decades as far back as the 1940s lined up at the goalpost as the school’s centennial team entered the field to take on Division High School. After the national anthem was played to perfection by the school’s band, there was a moment of silence to honor Glen Cove alumnus Angelo Fillipone (Class of ’98).
Honorary captain Bob Kormoski, who led the last undefeated Glen Cove football team in 1960, and City of Glen Cove Mayor Reginald Spinello joined the team’s captains for the coin toss, to kick off the historic event. New York State Sen. Carl Marcellino, NYS Assemblyman Charles Lavine and Glen Cove City Court Judge Richard McCord were also in attendance to cheer the team on.
During halftime, band members, cheerleaders and members of the kickline team performed. All of the alumni present stood on the field and each decade of athletes was announced and applauded.
The game was dedicated in memory of coach James Brennan, who began his career at Glen Cove in 1970 and became head coach of the football team in 1972. During his tenure, he won back the Chapman Bell, a fixture at Glen Cove High School graduations. Brennan also served as business chairperson and assistant principal for many years in Glen Cove before retiring in 2003. His family attended the game and rang the Chapman Bell to initiate the evening’s festivities.
Alumni in attendance signed a T-shirt and a football representing the decade in which they played. Those items will be placed in the school’s athletic showcase.
After the game, alumni and others gathered at the View Grill for a Booster Club-sponsored reception. Glen Cove athletics and the Booster Club extend a special thanks to the View Grill for donating appetizers to the event.

Grella to Attend Mount Saint Mary College
Glen Cove High School senior Taylor
Grella will attend and play soccer as a midfielder at Mount Saint Mary
College, a Division III school, in the fall.
Grella has been a member of the Glen Cove girls soccer program for the
past four years. This year, she was elected as a senior captain and was
instrumental in the success of the younger players feeling as though
they were part of the team. She also helped lead stretches throughout
the season. According to girls varsity soccer coach Peter Falen, Grella
put forth great effort and challenged herself to become better in the
years she played at Glen Cove. She also exhibited a strong sense of
pride as a member of the soccer team and put academics before sports.
“Taylor’s dedication and hard work would make her an asset to any job in
the workforce or institution of higher learning that she chooses,”
Falen said. “She is a reliable young lady who is very straightforward
and passionate, and her rapport with teammates and classmates alike has
left a great impression on the soccer program going forward.”

Brown and Chow Commit to Wilkes University
Glen Cove senior-athletes Caitlin Brown
and Braddock Chow will be attending and playing their respective sports,
softball and tennis, at Wilkes University this fall.
Caitlin has been a member of the varsity softball team for the past four
years. This year, she served as team captain, where she demonstrated
her leadership both on and off the field. Caitlin had an impressive
junior year, earning All-Conference as the team’s shortstop. However,
she came back even stronger and had an outstanding senior year. Caitlin,
who is a versatile player, was the starting catcher for the team. Her
strong defensive skills, as well as her consistency and power at the
plate, earned her All-County honors. This season, she batted .484 with
an on-base percentage of .507, leading the team with 24 RBIs. In
addition, her slugging percentage was a .797. Her power at the plate
resulted in eight doubles, three triples and two homeruns.
Braddock has played in the No. 1 singles position during four-varsity
seasons since ninth grade. Not only has he served as a team member, but
he was also captain of the varsity tennis team for the last three
seasons. Over his four seasons of high school play, Braddock has a
combined record of 51-7 at first singles. He also represented Glen Cove
in the County Tournament for four consecutive years. He is a four-time
All-Conference player and will be greatly missed at the top of the
lineup.

playing baseball at LIU Post this fall. Manzione received All-County
honors this past season and led Big Red in every offensive category with
six home runs and a batting average of .469.

Nassau County Senior Bowl All-Star game. Peet will play football at
Plymouth State College in New Hampshire.

Track Team Celebrates a Successful Season
The Glen Cove boys varsity track team is
wrapping up a successful season, with five of the boys qualifying for
the Nassau County meet, which showcases the talents of the best
student-athletes in the county.
Congratulations to Corey Dinkins, Christian Guevara, Tim Hogan, Rodney
Ray and Michael Thurmond. Hogan and Ray placed in the top three, earning
All-County awards. Ray placed first in the high jump, clearing an
impressive 6 feet 1 inch to beat out the competition.
Hogan not only placed second in the 100-meter dash, he came back and
placed second in the 200-meter dash, making him an All-County award
winner in both races. This was truly an amazing feat. Both of these
athletes will now compete in the state qualifying meet against the best
of the best of Nassau County. Good luck, guys!

Grella Heads to NYIT
The Glen Cove High School boys lacrosse
team is proud to announce that goalie Phil Grella will attend and play
at the New York Institute of Technology this fall.
The starting goalie for the past three seasons, Grella has started 42
games for the Big Red and amassed a 62 percent career save average.
"I'm very proud of Phil,” defensive coach Frank Curatolo said. “He has
put in many hours both during the season and in the off season to
improve each year."
In addition, Phil became the first Big Red goalie to score a goal,
taking the ball coast to coast vs. North Shore as time expired in the
game.
"We have relied heavily on Phil these past three seasons,” head coach Steve Tripp said. “He will be hard to replace."
Phil has been a leader both on and off the field. He is a member of SALT
(Student Athlete Leadership Team) and has performed many hours of
community service for the junior league lacrosse program. Athletic
Director Denise Kiernan and the Glen Cove School District also
congratulate Phil on his accomplishments and wish him well at NYIT.

Testa Commits to Mount Aloysius
Girls varsity soccer player Sara Testa
will attend and play soccer at Mount Aloysius College, a Division III
school in Pennsylvania, this fall.
Testa, a senior, has been an integral part of Glen Cove’s varsity soccer
team since she was a freshman. Coach Peter Falen attributes her years
in developmental leagues and training outside of school, along with her
physical tenacity and mental edge, to her success.
In the fall of 2013, Testa was diagnosed with a life-threatening
autoimmune disorder that attacked her brain stem and left her
hospitalized for three months. During that time, she remained focus on
her goal to survive and to play soccer in college.
Testa returned to school in June 2014 and was thrilled to take part in
her final season as a student-athlete and member of the girls soccer
program this year.
Falen said Testa’s journey and accomplishments have made her the young
lady she is today and expressed his pride in everything she has
achieved. “Her devotion and passion for her studies and her love of
soccer will make her an asset to any institution of higher learning or
job choice in the future,” he said.

Girls Lacrosse Team Dedicate Game in Memory of Tess Riso
Coaches Nicole Sileo and Melissa Rohr
The Glen Cove girls lacrosse team
dedicated their home game against Plainview JFK during spring break to
Tess Riso, daughter of former girls varsity assistant lacrosse coach Kim
Riso, who passed away three years ago.
The girls wore pink T-shirts in memory of Tess and won the game 8-7. The
team is competing in Conference IV and is currently 2-3 in their
league. They are led by senior captains Selena Guastella (attack), Jenny
Armstrong (defense) and Synella Gonzales (attack).
The defense features Erika Fonseca, Michelle Melfi, Rosa Pangari,
Lindsey Payton and goalie Karla Correa. The team has a strong attack
that includes Yenifer Molina, Alyssa Zangari and Lauren Rizzo.
Tristyn Hudson, Catherine Hatala, Taylah Hudson, Steffany Figueroa and
Katherine Willson round out the team with their midfield abilities. The
girls are determined, hard-working and have great chemistry, which will
hopefully lead to a successful season.

Varsity Cheer Ends Their Season at the Beach
Coach Amy Serr
The Glen Cove varsity cheerleaders
attended the CANAM National Cheerleading and Dance Competition, hosted
by Cheer Ltd. in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on March 20-22.
The team qualified to compete in the Large Varsity Non-Tumble division
along with seven other highly ranked teams from the East Coast. Some
members of the team also chose to compete in other divisions of the
competition. Victoria Tripp competed as an individual cheerleader in the
Senior Solo division against five advanced high school athletes. In
addition, Jessica Dawes, Lauren Martinez, Rosa Pangari, Kathryn Paolillo
and Tripp competed in the Senior Stunt Group division consisting of 15
elite stunt groups.
The team’s season began with tryouts in June 2014. At that time, it was
decided that the squad’s goal was to qualify and attend the 2015 CANAM
competition. The summer and fall were filled with preparations for the
year, involvement in community charity events, team fundraising efforts
and of course, Big Red football games. During the late fall and winter
seasons, the team attended five local competitions, taking home
first-place titles at Baldwin, Hofstra and Lynbrook, all while
supporting Glen Cove basketball during their season and playoff games.
After qualifying for the nationals in January, the team focused all of
their energy on practice and team building. Each athlete dedicated their
time, strength and emotion to the highly technical routine they planned
for nationals. Without each member's passion, the team as a whole
could’ve never succeeded. It is for this reason that the overall
difficulty and skill in their performance received top percentile
rankings. Glen Cove varsity cheerleading was awarded fourth runner-up
and the Senior Stunt Group was awarded 11th runner-up. In addition,
Tripp was third runner-up in the Senior Solo division.
Every varsity cheerleader during the 2014-2015 school year worked hard
to bring their school's name far beyond the shores of Long Island. With
the help of parents and other supporters, Glen Cove cheerleading has
developed into a proud tradition that will continue to excel.

Hudson Signs Letter of Intent
Glen Cove High School senior Taylah Hudson signed a Letter of Intent to play Division I basketball at Texas Southern University.
“I’ve been playing my whole life for this moment,” Hudson said. “I hope I can contribute to the team.”
Hudson received a full scholarship to Texas Southern and has been
playing varsity basketball since seventh grade. She was named All-County
Player twice by the coaches in Nassau County and Conference Player of
the Year in 2013. She was also designated as an All-State Player by the
Sportswriter’s Association of New York and named to the Basketball
Coaches’ Association of New York Section 8 All-Star Team.
Varsity girls basketball coach Greg Mayerhoffer said Hudson reached a
milestone in her career last season, when she became the all-time
scoring leader in the history of the girls program at Glen Cove.
Ultimately, she went on to surpass the 1,000-point total, an achievement
accomplished by very few student-athletes in the sport.
Superintendent of Schools Maria Rianna, Assistant Superintendent for
Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Dr. Michael Israel, Athletic
Director Denise Kiernan, Glen Cove High School Interim Principal Roseann
Cirnigliaro and guidance counselor Christine Mulhall offered their
congratulations at a recent celebration held in Hudson’s honor.
“I’m so happy for her,” Mulhall said. “She has a great work ethic
whether it’s at school or on the court and is a great role model for
younger girls.”
Taylah’s father, Assistant Principal Allen Hudson, expressed his pride in his daughter’s success.
“Anyone who meets her knows how humble she is,” Allen Hudson said. “She always thinks about her teammates first.”
Coach Mayerhoffer agreed, and said Hudson would always be regarded as
one of the very best to ever play basketball in Nassau County and New
York State.
“I’ve coached so many good players over the years, but she’s the best,”
he said. “I have no doubt she will be successful in the next stage of
her life, but I’m sad to see her leave.”
Girls Varsity Tennis Takes Conference 3 Title
The girls varsity tennis team, led by coach Chris MacDonald, took a
unique journey to their conference title. After a regular season record
of 9-3, Glen Cove earned a first-round home playoff match vs. Plainedge.
Glen Cove was able to defend their home field advantage and win 5-2,
allowing them to advance to the conference semifinals, where they faced
off against the undefeated East Meadow.
Competing against East Meadow’s regular season record of 12-0 seemed
daunting; however, Glen Cove was able to win decisively, 5-2, advancing
to the conference finals against rival Calhoun. Calhoun defeated Glen
Cove twice during the regular season by a score of 4-3. Calhoun also had
an undefeated record of 13-0 leading up to the final match. Glen Cove’s
resilient group of girls knew that they could rise to the challenge,
and although the match was a close grind, Glen Cove edged out Calhoun
4-3, taking home the Conference 3 title.
Below are the members of the team:

2nd Singles: Lauren Rizzo
3rd Singles: Jenny Armstrong

Boy's Soccer beats Roslyn and Jericho
Coach: Brian Smith

The 2014 Glen Cove Boy’s Varsity Soccer
team concluded a very successful season with a loss against top ranked
Great Neck North in the Quarter Finals of the Nassau County Conference A
Playoffs. Glen Cove, behind 2-0 with 20 minutes left to play in the
decisive game, tied the score with goals by forwards Delwin Hernandez
(10 goals) and Rudy Yanes (10 goals). The game went through double
overtime, with neither team able to capitalize on their chances.
Eventually, Great Neck North won the game on Penalty kicks.
The team earned signature victories in the regular season against Roslyn
(2-0), the number one ranked team in New York State, and against Great
Neck North (3-1). The team completed the regular season at third place
in the conference and received a well-deserved eighth overall seed in
the county playoffs.
Glen Cove began their quest for a county championship with a home
playoff game verse Jericho. Jericho, the 3-time defending New York State
champions brought their record-setting 21 consecutive playoff-winning
streak to Glen Cove High School. Jericho looked to continue their
dominance over Nassau County Soccer. The Glen Cove “Big Red” was not
intimidated or unmotivated to prove that they were up to the task of
ending Jericho’s streak. Glen Cove defeated Jericho (1-0) on a goal by
Matthew Rabanal. The pivotal goal was headed in off of a corner kick.

Glen Cove HS Varsity Volleyball
The
Girls’ varsity volleyball team has started off their season showing
much promise. The team is led by captains; senior Abbey Farnan and
junior Sara Tanke. Junior; setter; Sabrina Magrini has taken sophomore
Safire Blissett under her wing; showing her much of the ins and outs of
the difficult setting position. Senior Caitlin Brown and new comer
Cirina Capioppo have shown leadership qualities on and off the court
bringing this young varsity team together. Junior Brittnay Lizama has
made a positive impact on the team as she has shown far this season.
Tiffany Reveyoso junior and also a new comer to Glen Cove has worked her
way into the starting line-up becoming one of the varsities most
influential players. Sophomores and starting player Kamia Washington,
Julia Micko and Stefanny Figueroa all have shown what the definition of
hard work and dedication means. This is obvious by the development in
their skill level from last year to this year. Rounding up the very
young varsity volleyball team are freshman Grace Tenke and Sandra
Pajovic; who both are impact players and have contributed to the team
already.
Glen Cove started off their season with a win
against Mepham beating them in 3 straight games. Sara Tenke had 10
kills and 5 services aces to lead the way. The win was a whole team
effort.
Glen Cove also played in a tournament this Sunday
where they were the lowest ranked team. Going in the girls’ knew they
had nothing to lose. They were calm and ready to play hard. Winning
against Uniondale, Carle Place and Jericho who all rank in higher
conferences was a tremendous accomplishment for the young team. For the
first time in over a decade, the girl’s team made it to the tournament
playoff placing 4th out of a tough higher ranked seven teams. In the
playoffs, they faced a state champion caliber team; South Side.
Although Glen Cove lost they gave South Side a run for their money.

Although new to Glen Cove this year, Coach “Mayo,” as he is affectionately known by his players, is in his 26th season coaching girls basketball. He begin his career at Maria Regina High School before taking the reins at Floral Park High School from 1984-2008, where he guided the team to four county championships in 1988, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and two Long Island championships in 2008 and 2009. He has also served as an assistant coach in Massapequa and Levittown and runs an extensive summer basketball clinic.
Coach Mayerhofer has quickly become a hero in Glen Cove, as he is building momentum for the girls basketball program along with assistant coach George Ingram. “The student-athletes on his team know that he loves that game as much as he cares about each and every student-athlete in the program,” said Denise Kiernan, the district’s director of physical education, health and athletics. “We are very fortunate to have Coach Mayo here at Glen Cove High School and appreciate his efforts in making this program one of the best in the county.”
Taylah broke the team’s all-time scoring record with her 828th point vs. Floral Park High School back in December.

Big Red Defeats Hewlett in OT Thriller
The Glen Cove High School Big Red Football Team made history on Sunday with a 14-7 Overtime victory over Hewlett. Billy Neice ran the ball in from the 6 yard line and Max McCrindle added the extra point to give the Big Red the victory in the school’s first-ever overtime game.
The game, which was postponed on Thursday due to lightning, picked up with Hewlett on the Big Red 10 yard line looking for a score. But the Big Red defense rose to the occasion stopping the Bulldogs cold and forcing a missed field goal. All day long, the GC defense was able to rise to the occasion and stop the tricky Hewlett offense. Linebackers, McCrindle, Anthony Guttilla and Alex Aguillar teamed with defensive lineman Sean Peet, Diallo Brown, Coleman Ham and Rashawn White to pound the Hewlett ground game, while DB’s Paul Cavese, Erik Washington, Mike Burrell, Josh Martin and Josh Figueroa limited the Bulldog passing attack.
Hewlett would get on the board at the end of the first quarter and held a 7-0 lead into the second half. The Big Red was finally able to break through on a gutsy quick screen from QB David Perkins to WR Mike Burrell who took it 18 yards on a fourth and goal in the third quarter. McCrindle would add the extra point and the score was tied at 7.
Neither team could break through the rest of regulation, so the game went into overtime. On the first possession, after a GC penalty, Perkins hit Brown on first down getting the Big Red closer to the end zone. Guttilla would carry the ball to the six and a first down, followed by Neice’s six yard touchdown run behind some great blocks by linemen Peet, Ham, White, DeJean Taylor, Gaetano Famigletti.
Hewlett’s possession was the Big Red defense’s finest hour. Unable to run around the right side or the left side, the Bulldogs took to the air. DB Martin had his man covered on third down, and when DB Burrell corralled the Hewlett receiver, the Big Red celebration was on!
The Big Red travels to Lawrence on Saturday to take on the defending Long Island Champion Lawrence Golden Tornadoes. Game time is 1:30pm.

GCHS & Robbie Wagner Team to Renovate Tennis Courts
In an ongoing effort to maintain all facilities and
grounds in the Glen Cove School District, administrators recently
announced that tennis courts at Glen Cove High School have been
successfully resurfaced.
Director of Facilities Joseph Fiorino said that the school’s seven
tennis courts had been in poor shape, with six-inch wide cracks in the
pavement. Mr. Fiorino estimated that the last time the courts were
upgraded was 30 years ago.
Robbie Wagner’s Tournament Training Center of Glen Cove partnered with
the district to repair the tennis courts. The project commenced in 2011
and was completed this June. It included the installation of concrete
bases with asphalt tops, and sand paint was used for all the courts. The
project comes at no cost to the district.
“They’ve had great success in Glen Cove with the tennis program, and
they wanted to give back to the community,” Mr. Fiorino said of the
Robbie Wagner center.
GCHS has experienced success with its tennis program as well. The boys
varsity team was crowned conference champions in spring 2012, and the
girls varsity team was honored as conference champions in fall 2012.
The courts are now open to residents of Glen Cove for use.

Knights Under the Lights Program Mentors Jr. League Players
As pro football training camps are in full swing
throughout the country and interscholastic football programs prepare to
open practice, Glen Cove High School (GCHS) hosted a free evening
“Knights Under the Lights” football clinic for young aspiring players
ranging from ages five through 12 on August 7.
Held for the third straight year under the lights of GCHS’s football
field, the clinic brings Glen Cove football coaches and players together
with North Shore High School football coaches to teach youngsters who
participate in the Glen Cove City Junior Football League some basic
skills. Six different stations were organized to teach approximately 85
youngsters on hand proper passing, receiving, blocking, and tackling
techniques, with agility drills also conducted.
Glen Cove Varsity Head Coach Pete Kopecky, Assistant Coaches Tony Gallo
and Steve Tripp, JV Head Coach Frank Curatolo, Finely Middle School Head
Coach Steve Kocienda and volunteer Finley Assistant Coach John Nagle
all volunteered on behalf of the Glen Coach School District, along with
GCHS Big Red Varsity players and North Shore Head Coach Dan Agovino and
members of his staff.
GCHS’s Big Red varsity football is coming off their best season in 50
years in which they compiled an 8-2 record and an appearance in the
Nassau County Football playoffs. Coach Kopecky and the team also won the
Howie Vogts award as the most improved football team in Nassau County.
“It’s a win-win situation for everyone. The coaches are happy to donate
their time and our players really enjoy working with the younger kids,”
said Glen Cove School District Director of Athletics, Physical Education
and Health Denise Kiernan. “The players enjoy serving as mentors to the
little guys and girls, as many of them played in the Junior League
themselves. They hone their leadership skills and the kids learn a lot.
It’s a great night for everyone involved and we are happy to host it
with help from our neighbors at North Shore.”
Peanuts, PeeWee, Midget, and Pony players all enjoyed a warm evening of
fun and informative instruction on the GCHS field as they prepared for
the upcoming season. For more information on the Glen Cove City Junior
Football League, please refer to the league website at
www.eteamz.com/gcfootball/
The GCHS Big Red varsity football home schedule kicks off on Thursday, September 12 at 7pm vs. Hewlett.
