NYIT STEP Program Offers STEM Opportunities for Students

Since 2000, the Glen Cove School District has worked collaboratively with the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. This partnership has given the district’s high school students an opportunity to participate in the NYITCOM Science Technology Entry Program, which has three major goals: to introduce economically disadvantaged and traditionally underrepresented minority high school students to the health science professions and medical student role models; to provide high school students with instruction in research techniques and presentations; and to provide tactical lessons on college preparation.

This year, 36 students in grades 9-12 are participating in the High School Program, which is located at the NYIT Old Westbury Campus. All students will begin the program with a generalized science and math curriculum, under the supervision of both NYITCOM and NYIT faculty and the mentoring of NYITCOM and NYIT students.

The research students, under the guidance of NYITCOM faculty and mentoring of NYITCOM medical students, are writing abstracts and will present their research to their peers and at several conferences during the spring semester.

The robotics students will be under the supervision of the NYIT faculty from the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences and the mentoring of NYIT engineering students to build a robot and compete in regional VEX Robotics competitions. The first VEX competition will be held at Finley Middle School.

NYIT’s STEP offers a yearlong academic program to all students. NYITCOM also provides Day of Service Events, coordinated at each high school, in which more than 450 students are inspired through interaction and panel discussions with current NYITCOM medical students.

NYIT will be developing a Middle School Component, beginning with schoolwide assemblies and showcase events for math and science classes to be held at Finley Middle School for 2015-2016, with the goal to have the full Middle School Component up and running by September 2016.

The STEP program culminates with an End of the Year Awards Celebration Dinner. This annual event is an opportunity for all stakeholders in the project — students, parents and siblings, faculty, administrators and third-party partners — to gather together for a commemoration of all the students’ accomplishments throughout the year. Since 2006, 100 percent of the students graduating from the NYITCOM STEP program have continued on to college, with approximately 75 percent majoring in a STEM field.
